In a meeting, Eric Adams, the mayor of New York, assured that the massive arrival of migrants will “destroy” the city. The president assured that they have not received federal support in the national crisis he is going through, echoing his previous claims towards the administration of Joe Biden, the US president.

“We have turned this city around in 20 months. And then what happened? It started with a madman in Texas who decided that he wanted to put people on a bus to New York: 110,000 migrants,” Adams said.

According to the mayor, the increase in the arrival of migrants to New York seeking asylum is due to the efforts of governments in red states to remove them and take them to democratic states. Among them, the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, who dispatched buses full of migrants to New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Murad Awawdeh, the executive director of the New York Migration Coalition, told The Guardian that Adams’s claims were dangerous for the situation facing migrants in New York City. He called it “inciting language” that deepened divisions in the city.

“Using dangerous language sometimes leads to dangerous acts and we don’t want people to be in that situation. So it’s important that leaders understand how to communicate so they don’t put people’s lives at risk,” Awawdeh explained.

The director of the coalition also said that the real problem facing the city is the lack of affordable housing, since the housing crisis was already present since before the increase in the arrival of migrants. According to him, the rulers should direct their efforts there and not “demonize a vulnerable community.”

Of the more than 100,000 people who have come to New York this year seeking asylum, just over half are in the care of the city. They face problems finding housing, due to the high prices and because they do not meet the requirements to be viable candidates for rental assistance. Many of them have had to sleep on the streets while they wait for the government to solve their situation.
