The city of Erfurt wants to start an experiment on shop opening. The shops in the city center should open on a Friday afternoon and a full Saturday, said Mayor Andreas Bausewein (SPD) MDR THÜRINGEN. That is already planned for the coming week. However, since this involves a great deal of logistical effort, the experiment could also start a week later. That must now be clarified and prepared in cooperation with the city management. Erfurt also needs the approval of the state government.

Corona test tracks in downtown Erfurt
Shopping will only be allowed in Erfurt on the two days who have to undergo a quick test beforehand. The city pays for the tests. According to the plans, before customers can shop, they have to undergo a rapid corona test. To this end, Erfurt wants to set up four or five test tracks in the city center. Those who are free from Corona get a ribbon and can then stroll unhindered through the shops.

The “Erfurt model” is an experiment with calculable risk, said Bausewein MDR THÜRINGEN. If it works, further opening steps could follow. Erfurt expects around 10,000 customers and costs in the six-digit range. The experiment is expensive, but retailers should finally be able to open their shops again, said Bausewein.
