Eredivisie clubs Almere City and NAC Breda were eliminated by non-professional clubs in the first round of the KNVB Cup. Almere lost 3-0 to Quick Boys and NAC lost in injury time to BVV in Barendrecht, 2-1.
The cup competition is also over for Roda JC, who play in the first division. The Limburgers lost 3-1 at the amateur club Rijnsburgse Boys.
BVV Barendrecht started the amazing cup night with a late victory over NAC. NAC, who were promoted last season, are in seventh place in the Premier League, but had a difficult afternoon visiting number six of the second division. Barendrecht took the lead through Wouter Vermeer in the eighth minute.
By the looks of the game, the lead could hardly be called undeserved. Both teams had their chances, but it was only in the second half that NAC took control of the game.
An excellent keeper
Five minutes after half time, Lars Mol equalized. NAC pressed forward and had plenty of chances to stop the stunt. It was thanks to goalkeeper Jomar Gomes that Barendrecht survived.
Deep into injury time, Brent Vugts became a great hero. He scored the decisive goal in a thrilling final and fired Barendrecht into the second round at the expense of NAC.
Ten of the residents of Almeer lose
Almere City fell in Katwijk, where Quick Boys took the lead in the ninth minute.
Premier League coach Hedwiges Maduro’s team then made it even more difficult for themselves: Joey Jacobs was sent off immediately in the first half.
After the 2-0 from the subsequent penalty, Quick Boys ran to 3-0 in the second half. A second division player also got a red card, but that didn’t spoil the fun.
