Erectile dysfunction can be one of the complications of COVID-19

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A person who has been exposed to COVID-19 can experience other health problems, especially if he is a man. Health experts found erectile dysfunction (ED) to be one of the complications of the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“We now know people can have long-term health effects from this virus, neurological complications, and now there is some real concern here that men could have long-term problems with erectile dysfunction due to this virus,” said infectious disease expert Dena Grayson. Health, Wednesday.

According to him, this condition occurs because the virus causes problems with blood vessels and is something of great concern.

A study in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation in July examined the effects of COVID-19 on men’s sexual and reproductive health and found a correlation between coronavirus survivors and ED.

However, the link between COVID-19 and DE is still not exactly known. But experts agree that a variety of factors can contribute to the potential for ED after COVID-19.

One of the factors could be the effect of inflammation. Roman men’s health clinic doctor Mike Bohl said that in many people, the body damage caused by COVID-19 is not from the virus itself, but the body’s response to the virus. In other words, COVID-19 triggers hyperinflammation.

Hyperinflammation can lead to the formation of small blood clots and inflammation of the endothelium or the lining of the blood vessels.

“This endothelial dysfunction, coupled with the presence of blood clots, ultimately disrupts blood flow, (most importantly in terms of erections),” Bohl said.

COVID-19 can also exacerbate existing heart conditions, plus many drugs used to treat heart conditions can cause side effects in the form of erectile dysfunction.

“So there are two things that could potentially happen here, the virus that causes COVID-19 and inflammatory molecules that damage blood vessels, and drugs that cause side effects,” Bohl said.

Another factor

Bohl said stress, anxiety and depression were always potential causes of erectile dysfunction and as that number increased due to the pandemic, the rate of erectile dysfunction could also increase.

On the other hand, ED is usually a symptom of an underlying health problem. Men with poor health are more likely to develop ED and also experience complications related to COVID-19.

Clinical professor of urology, Jesse N. Mills said, COVID-19 causes severe physiological and psychological stress, which causes a decrease in testosterone levels and an increase in the release of stress hormones.

In fact, a man must have good nerve function, hormone (testosterone) levels, adequate blood flow and the desire for a normal erection.

Although a number of factors could explain why COVID-19 can cause ED, experts emphasize that more research is needed.
