It is the first time since the war broke out on October 7 that Erdogan has spoken to the US president.
While the US is Israel’s closest ally, Erdogan has for years expressed staunch support for the Palestinians. He has also called Israel’s prime minister the “butcher of Gaza” and referred to Israel as a “terrorist state”.
– The US can ensure a ceasefire by withdrawing its unconditional support for Israel, says a statement that Erdogan’s office has published after the telephone conversation.
– The US has a historic responsibility to ensure a permanent ceasefire in the region as soon as possible, Erdogan is said to have told Biden.
The White House has also issued a statement saying that Biden reiterated that Israel has the right to self-defense.
It also says that the two leaders discussed how to secure more emergency aid for the Gaza Strip, how the civilian population can be protected from the Israeli attacks and the need for a “political horizon” for the Palestinian people.
The White House emphasized Thursday that the United States wants the war to end as quickly as possible. The statement came after Israel’s defense minister told a US official that the war against Hamas could continue for several months.
