Erdogan praised Turks for their free will and 88.9% voter turnout – 2024-10-06 05:23:34

/ world today news/ President Recep Tayyip Erdogan praised the Turkish nation for defending its free will in the May 14 elections, which showed 88.9% voter turnout according to the High Electoral Council (YSK).

In a message he posted on Twitter, the president said the Turkish nation is defending its free will despite attempts at political manipulation by PKK/FETO terrorists, social media posts and foreign media.

He noted that the election was held in a festive manner, thanks to the foresight of the people, and said that the Turkish nation had emerged as the clear winner of the election.

The president expressed gratitude for receiving 49.51% of the vote and emerging as the leading electoral alliance in the Turkish parliament.

“With its democratic maturity in yesterday’s elections, Turkey proved that it is one of the countries with the most advanced democratic culture,” the president said.

He went on to say that as someone who has always recognized and respected the will of the people, he respects the election results and is committed to working “around the clock” to fulfill his responsibilities until May 28, the day of the presidential runoff.

“We hope to achieve a historic success by surpassing our May 14 votes and emerging victorious on May 28,” he said.

The People’s Alliance, which also includes the staunch ally in the form of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the Grand Union Party (BBP) and the New Welfare Party (YRP), a new member of the bloc, emerged victorious in the elections. He won about 50% of the vote, according to unofficial results.

More than 64.1 million people were registered to vote, including more than 1.76 million who had already voted abroad and 4.9 million first-time voters.

A total of 191,885 ballot boxes were placed for voters in the country. Each voter casts two ballots, one for the president and the other for deputies who will have a five-year term.

Voters were choosing between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is running for re-election, leading opposition candidate Kemal Kulçdaroğlu and Sinan Ogan.

Muharrem Ince, another presidential candidate, withdrew from the race earlier on Thursday.

However, despite his withdrawal, the YSK – Turkey’s electoral body – confirmed the validity of the votes for the candidate.

More than 30 political parties and 150 independent candidates participated in the elections.

Five multi-party blocs participated in the elections: People’s Union, National Union, Union of Ancestors, Labor and Freedom and Union of Socialist Forces.
