Ankara made a serious blunder in a meeting between European leaders and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. No chair was provided for the official talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Instead, there was only one chair next to Erdogan, quickly met by European Council President Charles Michel.
After staying upright for a while, Von der Layen sat on the couch opposite Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. However, she did not hide her astonishment that no chair was provided for her. The incident was widely discussed in the foreign media. Charles Michel’s behavior was also condemned.
According to some, it is inadmissible for two men to leave a lady without a place of honor. According to others, Ursula von der Leyen’s position is higher than Michel’s and he should have given up the chair.
In Turkey, however, they believe that the international protocol has been complied with.
