Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in Albania today for the inauguration of the largest mosque in the Balkans, but at the same time he is also giving… expensive gifts to Edi Rama.
According to Reuters, during their meeting, Rama revealed that Erdogan will “give us a significant number of kamikaze drones.”
“It is a gift that comes as a resounding message from Turkey, that Albania is immune. Of course, the fact that we will take the drones does not mean that we will attack someone” added the Albanian Prime Minister, who has already reached an agreement with Ankara for the purchase of Turkish Bayraktars.
The announcement was made on the sidelines of Erdogan’s one-day visit to Tirana, for the inauguration of a mosque.
According to a Reuters report, Rama said in announcing the donation of the suicide drones that “it is a gift that comes as a strong message from Turkey that Albania is invulnerable,” Rama said at a joint press conference during the one-day Erdogan’s visit.
Rama: “The drones are a gift from Turkey”
In fact, Eddie Rama described, according to the publication, the drones as a “gift”, which means that they will be given without monetary compensation.
A so-called kamikaze drone is a hovering munition that travels toward its target before plummeting at speed and exploding on impact.
A government spokesman contacted by Reuters could not elaborate on the number or type of drones. Rama also said that the acquisition of an unspecified number of Turkish kamikaze drones does not mean that “Albania will attack anyone.”
Most countries in the Western Balkans, including Albania, have begun upgrading their aging militaries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
