Erdogan Criticizes Israel, Calls for End of Relations: Impact on Turkey-Israel Relations

The Turkish president once again criticized Israel for the death and carnage caused by its response to the massacre by the Palestinian terrorist group “Hamas” on October 7.

Erdogan has called Israel a terrorist state, but described Hamas as a “liberation group”.

On Wednesday, the Turkish president made such statements again while addressing members of his Islamist party in parliament.

“Netanyahu has already written his name in history as the butcher of Gaza,” Erdogan said in a televised address.

He added that “with the murders committed in Gaza, Netanyahu supports anti-Semitism and threatens the safety of all Jews around the world.”

Erdogan’s harsh statements threaten the development of relations between Turkey and Israel. Only last year, the two sides restored diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level after a ten-year hiatus.

The two sides had also discussed building closer trade relations and were working on new energy projects that could help build long-term trust.

With the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, Israel withdrew all diplomatic staff from Turkey and other countries in the region for security reasons.

Turkey also recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv in protest at Israel’s actions.
