Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is preparing to present constitutional amendments to parliament that will protect families from “perverse tendencies”.

Erdogan criticized the global tendency of the family to lose importance, by which he apparently meant the revival of same-sex marriage.

The Turkish president stressed that legitimacy is at the basis of the union of a woman and a man, which is denigrated, while at the international level perversion, immorality and immoral relationships are promoted.

Erdogan and the AKP have been increasingly hard on the LGBT community in recent years, often calling them perverts.

“I believe that the proposed modification of the constitution that we will present to parliament in the coming days is an important step in this direction”, underlined Erdogan, declaring that he wanted to protect the institution of the family from the growing threat of perverse tendencies.

Kerem Dikmen, a lawyer with the LGBT rights group “Kaos GL”, said that strengthening the constitutional rights of one part of society should not lead to the loss of rights for another part of society.

Mentioning same-sex relationships in the context of families “deepens the concerns of LGBTI + people (…) at a time when hate speech against LGBTI + people and hate crimes are on the rise,” Dickman said.

Homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey, but hostility towards it is widespread.
