Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today asked the United Nations to impose an arms embargo on Israel, an “effective solution” to end the war in the Gaza Strip, the Turkish president said.
Erdogan made these statements in a statement issued after a few-hour meeting in Istanbul with the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
According to the Turkish announcement, “Israel seeks provocations to expand the conflicts in the region (…). A United Nations arms embargo on Israel would be an effective solution to ending Israeli aggression.”
It is recalled that in the same tone, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Tuesday characteristically stated that the time for diplomacy “is over”, calling for moves towards the imposition of “sanctions” against Israel. “There is nothing left for us to say diplomatically, politically… we are done with that. We need other tools,” Fidan told a conference on the “future of Palestine” held in Ankara.
The Turkish president also praised “permanent peace” in the Caucasus, after Fidan’s meeting with his four counterparts, Russian Sergei Lavrov, Iranian Abbas Araghchi, Armenian Ararat Mirzoyan and Azeri Zeihun Bairamov.
No details were given on the content of the discussions.
Tensions have recently arisen between Moscow and Tehran over the “Zangezur Corridor,” a project Azerbaijan is moving forward with Turkey to build a corridor on the border between Armenia, which has accepted the project, and Iran, against the wishes of of Tehran.
