Erdogan Announces Find The Largest Natural Gas In The Black Sea

Turkey finds the largest natural gas deep in the Black Sea

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, ISTANBUL – Turkey announced its largest natural gas discovery in the Black Sea 320 billion cubic meters on Friday (21/8). According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the discovery of natural gas is part of a larger reserve and could start operating immediately in 2023.

“Turkey has realized a discovery the largest natural gas in his history on the Black Sea, “he said in a widely televised address from the Ottoman palace in Istanbul.

Erdogan was seen connected to a drill ship in the western Black Sea, about 100 nautical miles north of the Turkish coast. If the gas can be extracted commercially, the discovery could change Turkey’s dependence on Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan for energy imports. Erdogan said his country was ultimately determined to become an energy exporter.

“This reserve is actually part of a much larger resource. Insha Allah more to come. It will not stop until we become an energy exporter country, “said Erdogan.

Turkey’s Energy Minister, Fatih Donmez, said the gas discovery was located in waters 2,100 meters deep with drilling up to 1,400 meters below the seabed. “We will drop another 1,000 meters … and the data shows we might reach gas there too,” he said explaining that gas operations in the field would be handled by a state-owned company.

As well as the Black Sea, Turkey has been exploring for hydrocarbons in the Mediterranean, survey operations in disputed waters have drawn protests from Greece and Cyprus. Greek and Turkish warships shadowing a Turkish survey ship collided in the region last week.
