Erdoan visits King Salman, first time since Turkey-Saudi Arabia tussle

JEDDAH – King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcome Turkish President Recep Tayyip . visit Erdogan at the Al-Salam Palace, Jeddah, Thursday night.

It was their first meeting since Turkey and Saudi Arabia clashed over the murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Riyadh’s rogue agents in Istanbul on October 2, 2018.

Collect Saudi Press Agency (SPA)Friday (29/4/2022), Erdogan arrived on his first trip to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 2017 at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and was received by the Governor of the Mecca Region Prince Khalid al-Faisal.

Earlier, the Turkish Presidency said that Erdogan’s visit was at the invitation of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

“All aspects of relations between Turkey and Saudi Arabia will be reviewed, and measures aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries will be discussed at the talks that will be held as part of the visit. In addition to bilateral relations, views on regional and international issues will be exchanged,” the Turkish Presidency said in a statement.

The murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018 has sparked tensions in relations between the two countries. Ankara wants the murder suspects to be tried in Turkey, but Riyadh has chosen to try it alone and has warned other countries not to interfere.

Since then, Ankara has sought to improve relations with Riyadh.

Apart from Saudi Arabia, Erdogan has also been working to improve relations with other countries in the region as he faces domestic challenges at home caused by an economy grappling with a falling lira and soaring inflation.
