ERC Ingolstadt signs Canadian defender of the Kölner Haie! – Hockey-News.info

ERC Ingolstadt strengthens the vacant position on the defensive with Maury Edwards. The right-hand shooter was under contract with Oberbayern from 2018 to 2020, was the top defender in the league in both seasons and was voted defender of the year in the 2019/20 season. At the ERC he received a one-year contract.

With the move to Ingolstadt, Edwards, who spent the past two seasons with the Kölner Haie, is perfectly set to return to his former place of work. So far, the defender has played 110 times in the Panther jersey and collected a strong 89 points (28 goals, 61 assists).

“We have now been able to fill the important position of the right-shooting defender, who we missed last season, with Maury. With him we get an absolute team player with impeccable character, who was always highly regarded by his teammates,” says sporting director Tim Regan. “With his qualities, he will be able to help us enormously both in five-a-side and on the power play.”

After his outstanding 2019/20 season, he moved to Cologne as acting defender of the year, where he was only able to play 18 games in the “Corona season”, but still contributed 16 points. In the past season he had 24 points (seven goals, 17 assists) in 55 games.

“With the Haien, who experienced a difficult season as a team, he recently had a different role that didn’t fully match his abilities. But Maury’s running is still strong, he has a very good understanding of the game and a first-class passing game and a good shot,” says Regan, emphasizing the Canadian’s qualities.

Edwards moved to ESV Kaufbeuren in 2013 via the NCAA college league and the ECHL. His class did not go unnoticed by the clubs from the PENNY DEL, so he signed on with the Straubing Tigers in 2015.

His first move to Ingolstadt followed three years later. Overall, the 35-year-old has played 346 games in the German elite league in which he scored an excellent 209 points.

“I’m really looking forward to being able to wear the blue and white jersey again. As a family, we felt very comfortable the first time we were in Ingolstadt and it’s great that we can now come back. I’m looking forward to meeting my former teammates and the guys who have joined since then,” says Edwards himself. “On the ice I want to be defensively stable and bring offensive aspects into the game so that I can hopefully work on the stats from my first two ERC years.”
