Of Erazer Deputy P50 review from Carl checks whether this laptop is as good as its brothers.
Erazer has built a formidable product line in 2023. In addition to the Erazer Deputy P50 the Beast X40 and especially the Major X20 have already left a deep impression. The Deputy P50 takes a different approach. This is one of the cheaper models in the series, which therefore has to make some concessions for the lower price. Still, that’s not necessarily a problem, as this is still an excellent laptop. In terms of value for money, this is perhaps one of the most impressive devices we’ve ever tested.
The Erazer Deputy P50 in particular has extremely impressive specifications for a target price of 1599 euros. My review model was equipped with the following specs:
- Processor: Intel Core i7-13700HX.
- Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060
- Internal memory: 16GB DDR5
I played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with all graphics settings on Ultra and achieved a flawless 60 frames per second – although this screen also goes higher (more on that later). F1 2022 is also a graphically demanding game, especially with all ray tracing options enabled. Here too, the Erazer Deputy P50 manages to combine graphic fidelity with excellent performance. It is remarkable how well this ‘weaker’ model from the Erazer 2023 lineup performs. The value for money in terms of target price and specifications is simply excellent.
The Erazer Deputy P50’s screen is a 15.6-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. The refresh rate clocks in at 240 Hz – more than high enough for even the most demanding e-athlete playing their beloved Counter-Strike. : Want to play Global Strike or DOTA 2 at the highest frame rates. From a purely visual perspective, this is a relatively unremarkable display. The peak brightness is 363 nits and the contrast is 1131:1. The gamut coverage is also not outstanding, with 93% sRGB, 67% Adobe RGB and 69% DCI-P3 according to our test. The ‘anti-glare coating’ on the screen is particularly successful, which is particularly effective. Even bright daylight behind me (admittedly a rarity in November in Belgium) couldn’t spoil the fun. In any case, this display is good enough for gaming, but not for those who need extremely accurate colors (for example for video editing).
The Erazer Deputy P50 is part of the Erazer 2023 laptop lineup and therefore shares many design choices. You get fantastic sound through the collaboration between Erazer and Nahimic, with not only good built-in speakers but also the option to create virtual surround sound via any Bluetooth speaker you have at home. Another unique feature of this year is lost on the Deputy P50. The more expensive models have a sublime keyboard, developed in collaboration with Cherry. Instead, you get a keyboard that does little to distinguish itself. Keystrokes provide no feedback, tactile or auditory. The typing is not bad per se, but it is certainly not memorable. The right shift key is also annoyingly small, so I often missed capital letters. In terms of typing and gaming experience, this is an unremarkable keyboard.
Visually, the Erazer Deputy P50 also looks a bit clumsier than its brothers. When closed, this is the same relatively sober style of Erazer, with only the tasteful logo on the back. However, when opened, there are some disturbing elements. The touchpad has a different shade of black than the rest of the chassis (although at the same time it shines nicely, as if it has diamond dust in it). The presence of a number pad makes the layout look very busy. And the most disturbing thing is that the WASD keys (or on my azerty layout: ZQSD) are outlined in white, which looks rather infantile.
Finally, the Erazer Deputy P50 has a nice range of I/O options that make up for many of those negatives. On the left side you’ll find two USB-A ports (2.0 and 3.2 Gen 2), and two 3.5mm audio jacks (for a microphone and headphones). On the right side you’ll find a Thunderbolt 4 port, a microSD card reader, and a Gigabit LAN port. Finally, on the back there are two video outputs (HDMI 2.1 and Mini DisplayPort 1.4) and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port. It’s a particularly solid range of connectivity options and the placement has clearly been carefully considered too so you never struggle with overlapping connections.
The Erazer Deputy P50 is highly recommended. You get truly sublime specifications here, a display with a particularly high refresh rate, fantastic sound, and a solid range of I/O options. The mentioned downsides are especially easy to forgive when you take the very reasonable target price into account. In terms of price-quality ratio, it hardly gets better than this laptop.
