sport">Vivianne Miedema scored two goals in regular time. Lieke Martens had the winning goal on her shoe ten minutes before the end, but missed a penalty kick.
sport">In the penalty series, the star Miedema and defender Aniek Nouwen failed, so that not the Netherlands, but the US will face Canada in the semi-final on Monday.

sport">Wiegman will leave Orange after the summer. She is going to work for the England women’s team. The success coach has led Orange to European Championship gold and World Cup silver since her appointment in 2017. For her achievements, the KNVB has already rewarded her with a statue on the campus in Zeist.
sport">In the run-up to the duel with the US, Wiegman was firmly convinced that she would advance with the Netherlands in the Olympic tournament. “No, no, this isn’t going to be my last game,” she said firmly. “I will remain national coach for a few more games. America is the number 1 in the world and still has a very good team, but it is different than at the World Cup. They seem a bit searching, it’s all a bit more difficult.”

Great opportunities
sport">Nevertheless, the Orange Lionesses initially had a hard time in the Yokohama stadium, where the 2002 World Cup final between Brazil and Germany was played. In the opening phase, America got two dots of chances.
sport">Fortunately, a goal by Tobin Heath was rejected for offside for the Netherlands, while Sari van Veenendaal distinguished himself moments later with a great save after a header by Samantha Mewis. It was a welcome boost for the goalkeeper, who was not in her best tournament in Japan.

Nose for the goal
sport">In the 18th minute, the first opportunity on the other side of the field was immediately hit. Miedema showed her unsurpassed nose for the goal and made it 1-0. According to many, the best striker in the world provided himself with just enough space after a cracked shot by Daniëlle van de Donk with a subtle bouncer, and then effectively lashed out with a dry bang.

Two goals in three minutes
sport">But where the Orange scores easily in this tournament, it also gives away many opportunities. That was again the case against the US. Jill Roord let Samantha Mewis rumble into the Dutch penalty area after 28 minutes, after which the American midfielder was able to head in freely after a pass from Lynn Williams.
sport">That same Williams helped the US take a lead three minutes later to make matters worse. The Orange forgot to give the ball to a stallion in a messy situation, after which the leather ended up at Williams’ feet. She was unrelenting: 1-2.

Miss Lieke Martens
sport">With her tenth goal in four Olympic duels, Miedema helped the Netherlands after the break to the relief of Wiegman and her teammates back into the game. After a strong individual action, she accurately pushed the ball into the left corner behind Alyssa Naeher. It was her ten goal of the tournament.
sport">Lieke Martens chose the other corner ten minutes before the end. A wrong decision. The referee had put the ball on the spot and the American goalkeeper had Martens in the eye, making an extension necessary.

Extension
sport">Martens seemed to make up for her miss at the beginning of extra time by hitting the target after Naeher’s struggles, but her goal was rejected due to offside. America also saw two goals reversed in the second half of extra time due to offside, after which penalties had to decide. Miedema – with 83 goals in 100 matches Orange’s top scorer of all time – missed the first, after which the Orange fought a losing battle. After Nouwen’s miss, it was Megan Rapinoe, also accurate from eleven meters in the World Cup final (0-2), who knocked the Netherlands out of the tournament.
