Closed following an incident involving Gabonese soldiers last September, the Akurenam border (Mofúb), in Equatorial Guinea, was reopened on Wednesday by decision of Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangué who announced the strengthening of cross-border security.
The decision was made this week by the vice president for State Defense and National Security. The border linking Gabon to the town of Akurenam, in Equatorial Guinea, has just been reopened. “I made this decision following the report of the joint commission that I formed to clarify the events of last September in Mofúb,” explains Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangué on the social network X.
Indeed, a few weeks ago, an incident involving compatriots took place at this border post: Gabonese soldiers who entered Equatorial Guinea illegally via the Akurenam border were loaned the vehicle belonging to to police officers across the country to carry out their shopping. Except that it contained, in its trunk, weapons with which the Gabonese had not hesitated to be filmed before posting the images on social networks.
The affair greatly displeased the number 2 of Equatorial Guinea who then declared: “Harmony with neighboring countries is quite good and leads us to help each other. But this should not allow us to lose our sense of responsibility..” To avoid a new incident at this border, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangué announced, Wednesday, November 8, the strengthening of cross-border security in his country.
