Equatorial Guinea: The 25th ECCAS Heads of State Summit was held in Sipopo

Libreville, Sunday October 20, 2024 (Infos Gabon) – The political, security and humanitarian situation in Central Africa was at the center of this summit on Friday in Sipopo, a town on the island of Bioko in Equatorial Guinea.

On October 18, Sipopo hosted the 25th ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), together with the 41st anniversary of this sub-regional institution. Present in Equatorial Guinea, the President of the Gabonese Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema participated in this meeting.

Therefore, together with Téodoro Obiang Nguema, President of Equatorial Guinea and current President of ECCAS, the leaders at this time discussed in particular the political, security and humanitarian situation in Central Africa. With the aim of reforming ECCAS, peace, the implementation of key projects in the area of ​​interconnection infrastructure, as well as strengthening community funding.

Expressing its concern over the security and humanitarian crisis facing the sub-region, the conference reaffirmed its commitment to deploying the necessary resources to care for people in the forced movement took effect.

To this end, she ordered the commission to speed up preparations to hold an extraordinary summit dedicated to the humanitarian crisis in Central Africa which should lead to the adoption of a common ECCAS regional humanitarian policy.

There were also other questions on the table of the Heads of State. Especially the situation in Gabon which has seen great progress after the Liberation coup on August 30, 2023. The draft of the new constitution has just been adopted by the Council of Ministers and will be submitted to a referendum on 16 November, 2024.

Abdou Abarry, Moussa Faki, Gilberto De Piedade Verissimo were also present at this Equatorial Guinea summit. They are respectively the Special Representatives in Central Africa and the head of the United Nations Regional Office for Africa (UNOCA), the president of the African Union Commission and the president of the Commission of the Economic Community of Central African States.
