“Equal Recognition for Vocational Training: A Proposal for Sustainable Prosperity”

The increasing shortage of skilled workers with vocational training is becoming one “Endangerment of Prosperity”warns the vice-president of the FDP– Parliament faction: “So we have to change something”, says Angela Freimuth. The Liberals’ proposal: Article 1 of the state constitution should be expanded by one paragraph. In it, the country should be obliged to work towards “that higher education and vocational training find equal social recognition and become more permeable.”

Increase recognition for professions

With this sentence, the state government wants to increase social recognition for all professions that do not require a university degree. Angela Freimuth knows what she’s talking about. She first completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker – before studying law. “When I decided to do vocational training back then, I was met with some surprise, even suspicion.”

In fact, academic training is becoming more and more the norm. In 2020, for the first time, more young people took up university studies than vocational training. The need for workers in care, day-care centers, in construction and in the heating engineer trade is growing, for example.
