The EVP is running in the Bern municipal council elections together with the FDP, GLP, Mitte and SVP. This is what the party base decided on Wednesday evening. In the end, the decision was clear with 36 yes to 14 no votes. This closes the ranks of the civil alliance, which is aiming for two seats in the Bern city government next autumn.

No media professionals were allowed at the party meeting. Joining the alliance is controversial within the party. Mainly because of the SVP, with which the EVP has hardly any overlap in terms of content. The same discussion drove a wedge into the green-liberal base a week ago. The EPP leadership also speaks of an “alliance of convenience” that is due to the electoral system. “We want to help bring the balance between left and right back into balance,” said party president Bettina Jans-Troxler.

Behind the closed doors, there was reportedly no criticism of the chosen path towards this goal. Barbara Streit-Stettler, EPP Vice President, summarized these votes as follows: “There is a fear that the EPP could suffer a loss of image.” Streit-Stettler has spoken out in favor of going onto the list, but also speaks of a “change of sides” that comes after careful consideration. In fact, the EPP was once one of the co-founders of Red-Green-Center (RGM) and, together with the Green Free List (GFL), stood for the “M” that made today’s Bernese city power bloc capable of gaining a majority.

Now the small party is becoming part of a center-right camp that is pooling its forces on a broad-based list for the first time ever. It is unclear who the EPP will send into the race for the local council seats. It will probably be Bettina Jans-Troxler, who already competed in 2020. The EPP will nominate its candidate on March 20th.
