Choose a non-mainstream life

What values do you base on when making big and small choices in life?

For me, fun is the biggest factor. To me, ‘fun’ means when it’s new, meaningful, romantic, or I like the person who suggested the job. If you do something that you feel is fun, you will never run out of ideas and the results will be good, but if you do something that you are not attracted to, your head and hands will become stiff and the results will not be good. In addition, my tastes were often the opposite of those of others, so when I was young, I was a more picky and unusual teenager. But ironically, he was also a model student. Because of his picky personality, he hated breaking the dress code, and after finishing school, he went to the library to read books. Being immersed in the ‘joy of knowing’ worked well for me. After quietly reading books and studying hard, I dropped out of high school in the spring of my first year. This is because school no longer gave me the joy of knowing or the romance that could be realized. I wanted to break away from the squirrel wheel and continue looking for new and interesting things to study.

After leaving school and looking for a job that I thought would be fun and a good fit, I ended up choosing film. However, I didn’t want to live in Seoul because it was complicated, and I preferred independent films to commercial films. So, I decided to make my new home in Busan, which has the title of ‘city of movies’ and where many of my relatives live. While studying the world with the enthusiasm and passion of my younger days, my back broke and I returned to my hometown, Geochang, to recuperate. I met a temple called Daegoksa Temple in Uiseong and Seonunsa Temple in Gochang, which I met on a bicycle trip to rekindle my last romance. I went back and forth, staying at a temple for four years and studying scenarios.

After regaining her health, she went back to Busan and had a long-distance relationship while working and filming for about two years. Then, in July 2020, just before the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic began, she started living together with her husband, Jun-i, in Daegu. And a year later, Siwon was born, and we are raising children to this day, and with the new topic of barrier-free, we are continuing our activities in various fields such as exhibitions and classes as well as movies.

Even if I roughly sum it up, my life is far from normal. However, it is not that I have lived a life completely unrelated to normal life. Although each episode seems unrelated, they are closely connected and become my own personality, so although I am not a genius artist, I do some pretty interesting work. Even though he has not become rich or famous, and although he is not successful in the eyes of others, he is living a life that people are curious about. Even though it’s a non-mainstream genre, it’s quite a movie-like and interesting life, isn’t it? It’s because people don’t know about it, but when you know it, non-mainstream things have a charm.
