Episode 28: The internet world where truth and lies are mixed

We have passed the Internet age and are living in the AI age.

Just a few years ago, I think there was a lot of talk about metaverse and semiconductors, but now there is a lot of talk about AI.

Chat gpt will have a big impact, right?

There is so much information on the Internet.

Among them, there are truths and lies.

I accidentally said the wrong thing while trying to tell the truth. I can correct it, but the problem is that there is an intentional lie.

There are many cases where the truth is cleverly changed.

Aren’t the press and media representative?

Everyone knows that there are many fishing articles in politics and entertainment news.

I would like to introduce this to you because I recently experienced a small shock.

I’m trying to run Naver Smart Store during my break from work.

This is a format where products are imported from a wholesale site and put on the store to be sold.

There are so many products on wholesale sites, and the same products are often sold at different prices, so you need to choose your products carefully.

When it’s difficult to choose a product, I sometimes sort by ‘popular product’ and select the top product.

The problem is that the ‘most popular products’ order was false.

Product A was uploaded today.

If I go to the homepage today and sort the product information by ‘popular products’, product A will not be at the top.

Because I just uploaded it. Because it wouldn’t have sold a lot.

Surprisingly, product A was ranked high.

I checked it by comparing it with the ‘recently registered’ sort.

It was a shock.

‘Popular Products’ even included products that had never been sold.

You probably use Naver Shopping a lot when buying things online.

When selecting products, you can sort them by Naver ranking, price, number of reviews, or score.

I usually choose products in order of the most reviews.

Many people, like me, will choose products in order of the number of reviews.

What if this data is not pure?

For example, the number of reviews on a page selling the iPhone 12, 13, and 14 together would be higher than on a page selling only the iPhone 14, right?

If 140,000 individual pages have 1,000 reviews, but the pages sold together have 2,500 (1000 each for 12 and 13, and 500 for 14), then the number of reviews on the individual pages is actually a lot, right?

What if Naver Ranking is not the standard we think it is?

Products that I find attractive do not rise to the top.

What if the algorithm’s favorite product rises to the top?

Can we trust this data?

From the perspective of exposure and advertising, the conflict of interest may be questioned.

It’s not what I need, but I can display data from sellers who spent a lot of money on advertising at the top.

There are formal advertising services, but it is difficult to trust them 100% because companies do not disclose their exact algorithms.

Because of these things, I keep trying to go back to analog.

I don’t want to be recommended any products or services, and I don’t want to leave any data behind.

In the past, if they offered a gifticon, I would sign up as a member, but I don’t do that anymore.

Because I know they are trying to buy my data with gifticons.

Of course, I may have a very rebellious temperament.

It’s really difficult to distinguish between truth and lies in modern society, but I think we need to keep thinking and doubting.

Personally, I think that if you understand the flow of money, you can easily see the truth.

Who makes money from this practice?
