Epidemiologist: There is no mutation in the gene that causes the severity of Covid-19

To date, no mutation has occurred in the gene that determines the severity of the disease

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Epidemiologist from the University of Indonesia Tri Yunis Miko Wahyono said that until now there has been no mutation in the gene that causes disease severity in the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19. According to him, if there is a mutation in the gene that causes the severity of the disease, it will be very worrying because there is the possibility of causing the clinical symptoms of Covid-19 to get worse.

“Alhamdulillah, until now not a single mutation has occurred in the gene that determines the severity of the disease. If possible, don’t,” Yunis said when contacted by Antara in Jakarta, Friday (7/1/2022).

The severity of the disease is related to the clinical symptoms experienced by Covid-19 sufferers and is not related to the rate of transmission. Yunis said a variant can be more dangerous depending on the mutation that occurs in certain genes. According to him, the most dangerous is if mutations occur in genes that determine the severity of the disease.

But so far, there has been no mutation in the gene that determines disease severity in the corona virus that causes Covid-19. Many mutations occur in the genes responsible for transmission.

Yunis said the RNA chain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 is long, making it easy to mutate. These mutations can lead to the emergence of new mutants or variants.

Previously, the Spokesperson for the Covid-19 Vaccination of the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi said: varian Omicron of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 causes a higher risk of transmission in the household than Delta. “The risk of transmission in the household with Omicron is higher because it transmits more quickly,” said Nadia in a virtual discussion on Stemming Omicron’s Transmission recently.

Nadia said Omicron transmission can be three times faster than the Delta variant. One case of Delta infection can spread to 6-8 people. In addition, Omicron is also capable of causing re-infection in people who have been infected with Covid-19.
