Epidemiologist Recommends Four Strategies to Control Omicron Transmission

The government can reduce the spread of the Omicron case with a special strategy.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PONTIANAK — Epidemiologist from the Pontianak Health Polytechnic, Malik Saepudin, recommends a strategy for controlling variant transmission Omicron to local governments in the West Kalimantan region. “There are four strategies that local governments can take to reduce the spread of Omicron cases, including early detection of infection cases, preventing imported cases, reducing domestic spread, and strengthening self-protection,” said Malik in Pontianak, Thursday (17/2/2022).

He said local governments could detect cases of Omicron infection early by intensifying case tracking and examination activities. Prevention of imported cases, he continued, can be done by conducting inspections to detect transmission of the virus using the RT-PCR method on travelers who want to enter or leave the West Kalimantan region.

“Including RT-PCR again when doing quarantine,” he said.

In addition, according to him, local governments need to reduce the risk of disease transmission by intensifying surveillance and imposing restrictions on community activities. The local government, he continued, must also strengthen citizens’ self-protection against COVID-19 attacks by carrying out vaccinations and enforcing health protocols. Malik reminded residents to be disciplined in implementing health protocols to avoid transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19, including the Omicron variant of the corona virus.

“Use an N95 mask, test and quarantine if you are in contact or have symptoms. Don’t forget to maintain personal and environmental hygiene, (implement) a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Residents who have been vaccinated and have COVID-19 but only experience mild symptoms, he said, should undergo self-isolation and minimize contact with other people to prevent transmission of the virus. People who are in close contact with residents who are infected with COVID-19, he continued, must immediately go to a health facility and self-isolate.

“Don’t forget to keep eating balanced nutritious foods, maintain fitness, maintain fluid needs, and take symptomatic medication,” he said.

Malik stated that the success of COVID-19 control efforts is determined by speed, accuracy, strength, and consistency in responding to cases of disease transmission.

“No matter how good a pandemic control strategy is, it will fail or not be optimal if there is a lack of support in its implementation,” he added.
