Epidemiologist: Don’t Dream Covid-19 Pandemic Will Be Finished This Year Page all

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Epidemiologist from the University of Indonesia (UI) Pandu Riono assesses, a pandemic Covid-19 in Indonesia will not be completed anytime soon.

According to her, pandemic Covid-19 will still take place in the next few years.

He predicts that, until December, the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet.

“This pandemic is still long, (it could be) two, three, four years, or maybe up to five years. So don’t dream that the pandemic will be completed this year because the problem is very difficult,” Pandu said in the webinar ‘Urgency for Handling Population Dense Settlements Facing Pandemic Covid-19‘, Thursday (07/09/2020).

Pandu said that the government was not serious in handling the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many local governments do not conduct Covid-19 audits by method polymerase chain reaction (PCR) because they do not want the area to be in the red zone.

“So don’t dream of ending this pandemic quickly because we are not serious about handling a pandemic at all,” he said.

If you want to speed up the handling of Covid-19, Pandu said, the government must really actively track the case (tracing), conduct a PCR test, and isolate positive patients from Covid-19.

The patient isolation place must be located some distance from the settlement so that it does not have the potential to transmit the virus to others.

Another step is that the government must also ensure that the public is disciplined in implementing 3M, namely wearing masks, washing hands with soap, and keeping their distance.

“If there is an improvement (handling Covid-19), doing 3M, correct isolation, correct tracking, the right test, not with a rapid test, but with a PCR test, then we will quickly strike it,” said Pandu.

The PCR test was mainly conducted in areas prone to Covid-19 transmission.

Covid-19 positive patients were found through active case finding then immediately isolated.

“(Active case finding) this is what causes Jakarta’s high (Covid-19) number. Not that bad, but instead we found them (positive patients Covid-19) who were outside. “If it is not found, they will risk even more to infect others,” Suharti said in the webinar.
