Epic Games tightens cooperation with its external partners, and this is followed by a lot of money. In today statement the company informed that two investors – Sony Group Corporation and the KIRKBI holding (which includes, among others, the LEGO group) – invested a billion dollars in Epic Games.
The money is to be used to “build the metaverse” and “support the further development of the company”. The metaversum in this case may mean the recently announced joint project Epic Games and LEGO, whose goal is to create a child-friendly environment on the Internet. Although it is also possible that thanks to this investment we will get another “metaverse”.
The press release quoted the statements of the heads of all three companies involved in the transaction. The willingness to cooperate and work for joint development in the field of digital entertainment was assured:
As a creative entertainment company, we’re excited to invest in Epic Games to deepen our relationship in the metaversum, a space where creators and users share their time. We also believe that the knowledge possessed by Epic and a powerful game engine [Unreal Engine – dop. red.]combined with Sony technologies will accelerate our various endeavors, such as developing new digital fan experiences in sports and virtual production initiatives.
– Kenichiro Yoshida, prezes Sony Group Corporation
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, also spoke in a similar vein. Unreal Engine 5, which had its own, will certainly be able to help in creating new projects premiere last week.
Epic Games is valued at $ 31.5 billion after the investment is finalized. By comparison, Activision Blizzard is currently worth $ 62.5 billion.
