A trial initiated by video game developer Epic Games against technology giant Apple begins on Monday in a US federal court in San Francisco. The process, which could have far-reaching effects on the Internet industry, is about Apple’s market power through its app store. Apple CEO Tim Cook is also likely to testify as a witness.
Apple only allows apps and games to be downloaded on its mobile devices from its own app store. As a payment method, the group stipulates its own Apple Pay system and collects up to 30 percent of the app providers’ income as a fee. The dispute with Epic Games escalated in August when the game maker tried to bypass Apple Pay as a means of payment. Apple then banned the most popular game from Epic Games, “Fortnite”, from its app store.
