Epic Games goes to court to reverse the Fortnite blockade
Epic says it has challenged Apple because it is one of the few companies that can handle the technology giant. Still, Epic Games is demanding that Fortnite return to the App Store.
If that doesn’t happen, the game developer claims to be irreparably damaged. The number of Fortnite users on iOS has fallen 60 percent since Apple removed the game from the App store.
Epic Games introduced a direct payment option in Fortnite in mid-August. This allows players to buy currency for the game without Epic having to hand over a portion of the proceeds to Apple. That was a deliberate violation of the rules of the App Store. Apple deleted Fortnite therefore almost immediately.
‘Apple is a monopolist’
Epic believes that Apple is a monopolist, maintaining its dominant position by exploiting other companies. The game manufacturer therefore sued Apple, hoping that a court ruling will force Apple to take a different course.
Apple is willing to make Fortnite available again in the App Store during the lawsuit. In that case, however, Epic must first remove the direct payment option. The developer does not seem to intend that for the time being.
The hearing on this injunction will take place on September 28. Do you want to keep up with the battle between Apple and Epic Games? Then register for our newsletter or download the iPhoned-app.
