Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney Explains Controversial Layoffs and Financial Struggles

Recently, Epic Games announced that it would be laying off a large portion of its developer staff, around 830 people to be exact. The news sent huge waves across the gaming industry, and now CEO Tim Sweeney has spoken out about why so many people had to lose their jobs.

Sweeney said at an annual conference dedicated to Unreal Engine that the layoffs are“Necessary survival measures”and the decision to terminate the contracts of so many workers was“That way we don’t run out of money building the Metaverse”.

Sweeney also mentioned that Epic was aware of the economic conditions for about 10 weeks before deciding to lay off more than 800 employees. As for how Epic got to this point, considering the massive success of Fortnite, the company has still managed to spend more money than it has now, and there’s no doubt that expensive lawsuits and ongoing court cases against Apple haven’t put a dent in Epic’s finances Things get better.
