Epic Games buys 3D environment capture software company

Epic Games announced the purchase of Capturing Reality, a company that develops the eponymous software for capturing 3D photorealistic environments. With that, the platform should become part of the development ecosystem of Unreal Engine.

In a statement, Epic Games said the goal of the deal is to make the technology cheaper and more accessible. The program is already used to capture 3D environments, which can be used as realistic scenarios for games, animations and movies.

To make the service more accessible, Epic Games informs that the price of the product will fall. “In fact, starting today, Capturing Reality will reduce prices for new and existing customers”, explains a statement.

The software is used for 3D reconstruction of objects and even complete scenarios in any size, using photos and laser scanning, in a process called photogrammetry.

With the integration of Capturing Reality with Unreal Engine, developers will be able to easily upload images and create 3D models within the graphics engine. However, the statement points out that the software will not be exclusive to Unreal Engine.

The two companies will not provide details of the negotiation or purchase price.
