Epic Games announced that Apple has restored its iOS platform developer account in the EU, which means that the Epic Games Store game market service that was previously announced for iOS devices in the EU will be launched smoothly.

After Epic Games can once again use its iOS platform developer account in the European Union, it means that it will be able to put its games and software application services on the App Store in the European Union again. Epic Games has recently revealed that it will provide its iOS devices for the European Union. The Epic Games Store service will also bring the “Fortnite” game back to iOS devices, eliminating the need for users to play through streaming game services such as Xbox Game Pass or GeForce Now.

Although under the influence of the EU Digital Market Law, Apple must allow iOS device users to download apps through third-party software market services in the EU. Therefore, when adjusting the policy content in the future, Apple also agrees to allow developers and operators to submit applications to the EU within the EU. iOS devices provide third-party software market services, but such services are still required to have the same security standards as Apple. This has led to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently criticizing Apple for actually not intending to suppress third parties with heavy regulations. The software market joins the competition.

Tim Sweeney even believes that Apple requires developers to provide downloadable apps through the App Store or other third-party software markets. Once the number of installations exceeds the 1 million threshold, they must pay Apple 0.5 euros for the first installation every year. As a core technology fee, it is believed that Apple has deliberately exploited developers many times. Even if developers use other third-party payment services, Apple still manages to collect fees from them and create a favorable situation for them.

On the other hand, Tim Sweeney believes that Apple still has a monopoly in the mobile game market, but the court ultimately ruled that Apple’s relevant practices did not form a monopoly.

In an earlier announcement of the annual game usage review for 2023, Epic Games stated that the total number of PC players on its services has exceeded 270 million, and the number of monthly active users in December last year reached 75 million, an increase from the same period last year. 10%, while the amount spent on the Epic Games Store totaled more than 950 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 16% compared to the same period last year, while the amount spent on third-party games available in the Epic Games Store was 310 million U.S. dollars, compared with the previous year. A decrease of 13% over the same period last year.

At the same time, Epic Games provided a total of 86 free games last year, with an average satisfaction rate of 75%. The number of claimants exceeded 596 million, and the total value exceeded US$2.055 billion.
