Epic Games has bought the game developer behind Rock Band and Guitar Hero, Harmonix. The two companies announced the acquisition in a statement.
As per the announcement, the Harmonix team will be collaborating with Epic Games to create a “music and gameplay journey” for Fortnite, but said it would not be leaving any other music game projects. The studio noted that they still plan to move forward with a Rock Band release slated for 2022 and will continue to support its old games.
Epic Games attributes the acquisition to the need for Harmonix’s expertise in music creation and distribution as they work to build the metaverse. “Harmonix has always aspired to create the world’s most beloved interactive music experience, and by joining forces with Epic we will be able to do this at scale,” said Alex Rigopulos, Co-Founder and Chairman of Harmonix.
“Together we will push the creative boundaries of what is possible and find new ways for our players to create, perform and share music.”
Epic has expanded its focus on music in Fortnite with the in-game “Rift Tour” concert series, which has engaged Ariana Grande, Marshmello, and others to take to the virtual stage.
