Islamic State fighters have killed at least 10 soldiers in an attack in northern Syria. This is reported by a British human rights organization that monitors the situation in Syria.
According to the report, armed IS fighters stormed a number of checkpoints near the city of Raqqah. They fired on army vehicles and also set them on fire. Six soldiers were injured, some of them in critical condition.
There is no mention of the IS attack in Syrian state media. The terror organization has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack through any of its propaganda channels.
200 soldiers killed
About 200 Syrian army soldiers have been killed in attacks by IS so far this year. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) concludes this on the basis of its own research. The organization relies on public sources, such as social media and a network of local residents.
In the desert of Syria, about 150 civilians were killed by Islamic State in 2023, according to the SOHR. Twenty IS terrorists are said to have been killed by the Syrian army or in bombings by the Russian army. Dictator Assad is a military ally of President Putin.
IS had occupied large parts of Iraq and Syria for years. By 2019, it had lost all of these territories. On the one hand, the terrorist organization was pushed back by a Western coalition that supported Syrian opposition groups from the air. On the other hand, the government army also fought IS with the help of Russian air support.
