EPA Director Mati Diop receives the Golden Bear

From documentaryfilm Dahomey by French-born director Mati Diop has won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The 67-minute short film by the director with Senegalese roots is about the return of 26 art treasures that were stolen from Africa by the French colonial rulers in the late 19th century.

In her film, Diop gives a voice to both the looted royal figures who are shipped back to Benin and to Benin students who discuss the return of the looted art. What is its value and who actually benefits from it?

Broken family

This year the Silver Bear went to German director Matthias Glasner for the script of his drama Die. It is an intimate drama about a broken family that cautiously comes closer to each other in the face of death. It was the only prize for Germany in the competition.

This year’s Grand Jury Prize was awarded to South Korea for Yeohaengjaui pilyo (The needs of a traveler) by director Hong Sang-soo starring French actress Isabelle Huppert.

Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan received a Silver Bear for his leading role in the tragicomedy A Different Man and the British Emily Watson received the same prize for her supporting role in the Irish-Belgian drama Small Things Like These. For his experimental film Pepe, about a dead hippopotamus in Colombia, the Dominican Nelson Carlos De Los Santos Arias received the Silver Bear for best director.

American film director Martin Scorsese, known for films such as Taxi Driver in Gangs of New Yorkwas awarded an honorary Golden Bear four days ago at the Berlinale for his entire oeuvre.
