European leaders have decided to open negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on accession to the European Union. This is what Charles Michel, President of the European Council, writes X.
In addition, the European Council has granted Georgia the status of candidate member. Ukraine and Moldova have been so since last year, when EU leaders agreed.
“This is a victory for Ukraine and all of Europe,” Zelensky responded to the European leaders’ decision.
Ukraine and Moldova received the green light from the European Commission for negotiations on EU membership more than a month ago. However, the decision to start negotiations is not up to the committee, but up to the 27 EU leaders. They had to unanimously agree to the positive advice of the European Commission.
