The Dutch terror suspect who was arrested today in Rotterdam was arrested for active membership of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas. That reports the German justice system. According to German authorities, the 57-year-old man, Nazih R., has been a member of Hamas for years and is said to have participated in the organization’s foreign operations.

Three other suspects in the same investigation have been arrested in Germany. This concerns Mohamed B. from Egypt and Abdelhamid Al A. and Ibrahim El-R, born in Lebanon. According to German authorities, the four have close ties to the military leaders of Hamas. The German Public Prosecution Service “strongly suspects” them of membership of a foreign terrorist organization.

Dutch police reported earlier today that the man arrested in Rotterdam was wanted by Danish and German authorities. Three suspects have also been arrested in Denmark. It is not known whether there is a connection with this case.

The National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security in the Netherlands does not want to say anything about this case. This week he increased the threat level in the Netherlands from 3 (significant) to 4 (substantial). This means that there is a real chance that an attack will take place in the Netherlands. The threat level has also recently been increased in Germany.

Weapons storage location

German justice says that one of the four men arrested this year went looking for an underground weapons storage location at the request of Hamas. He is said to have received his orders from Hamas leaders in Lebanon. According to the justice department, three of the four men went from Berlin several times in search of weapons, with the aim of committing attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe. Another supported them in this.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office says Danish security services have thwarted an attack on civilians “on behalf of Hamas.” Israeli secret service Mossad says “Hamas infrastructure on European soil” has been exposed.
