The European Union (EU) should supply tanks to Ukraine, as well as speed up the procedure for Ukraine’s admission to the bloc, European Parliament (EP) President Roberta Metsol said in an interview with the agency on Wednesday. AFP print.

The speaker stated that she will deliver this message on Friday at the EU Leaders Summit in Prague.

Ukrainians “need weapons to fight with in order to regain their territory, and this means, for example, the Leopard II tanks that several member states have,” Metsola said in an interview in Strasbourg during the plenary session of the parliament.

However, Kiev has been pushing for some time for German-designed Leopard II tanks to be supplied to them

Berlin has so far not consented to such deliveries, preferring that such deliveries take place within the framework of a broader agreement of the Western allies.

According to an EU official, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, as well as non-EU countries Norway, Switzerland and Turkey, have a total of around 2,000 of these tanks.

Countries willing to supply their tanks should be compensated by funds from the EU fund – the European Peace Facility – in which € 2.5 billion has been allocated for Ukrainian military purchases, the spokesperson said.

“I think we need these discussions now, especially as we see Russia escalating, but also, on the other hand, as we see Ukraine successfully pushed back the Russians,” he explained.

Several EU countries have expressed concern that large gifts from their arsenals could weaken their defense capabilities.

However, Metsola opposed this, stating that deliveries of Leopard tanks “will not create a significant gap” in the military forces of individual countries.
