Sinn Féin’s Eoin Ó Broin has expressed regret for a tweet in which he depicted Irish police, the Gardaí, as being involved in a recent eviction. The tweet included an image of masked officers alongside an image of the disputed eviction in Dublin. In the accompanying text, Ó Broin criticised the police and stated: “The practice of using the Gardaí to enforce court ordered evictions on behalf of private banks and landlords has to end”. The tweet sparked widespread criticism, with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar describing it as “dangerous and irresponsible”. Ó Broin subsequently deleted the tweet, stating that he had not meant to suggest that the police had been involved in the eviction.
