New York, Sep 8 (EFE).- Two environmentally motivated protests promoted by two different organizations “slipped” on Thursday into two of the most media events of the year in New York, the United States Tennis Open and Fashion Week .
The first protest took place during the afternoon in the middle of the match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova, when three activists from the organization Extinction Rebellion, which combats the effects of the climate crisis, began to shout from their seats “End Fossil Fuels” (stop fossil fuels).
When tournament security, aided by the New York police, approached to remove them from Arthur Ashe Stadium, they realized that one of them had stuck his bare feet to the ground, so they had to proceed to remove him before evacuate him from the place.
The match was suspended for 49 minutes, during which many attendees became impatient and shouted at the activists.
Coco Gauff was much more understanding, and in a press conference after the game, when asked about what happened, she said: “I wasn’t angry with those who protested, I always say that you have to preach what you believe in, and they did it right.” peacefully,” she summarized, without forgetting to add that she does believe in climate change and that “there are things we have to do better.”
The organizing organization later issued a statement and its spokesman Jack Baldwin said: “We have tried non-disruptive protests for fifty years, and they have been of no use. They leave us no choice but to resort to disruptive methods,” according to the New York Times .
Shortly after, in another place in the city and at an opening event of the New York Fashion Week, which usually arouses great media attention although with a different audience, some activists from the PETA organization for animal rights stormed the catwalk where they were parading. the models of the Coach brand.
In their case, they were protesting against the sacrifice of animals for the fashion industry, whether to use their hair or leather: “Coach: Leather Kills,” read the sign carried by one of the activists and that was displayed above his head.
But the one that caught the most attention was another of her companions, half-naked, who had painted her entire body and had written the same motto on the paint.
PETA immediately uploaded a video of the protest act to its social media accounts, accompanied by the following phrase: “It’s time to stop selling other people’s skin and end leather, @Coach.”
The two activists made almost a complete turn around the walkway before a member of security pounced on one of them, ending the protest.
Coach, who was posting images of his parade, omitted those of the protest and has not made the slightest mention of what happened until now.
