Environmentalists plan to sue car manufacturers in Germany. They want a ban on the sale of internal combustion cars

Environmental organizations Greenpeace and Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) intend to sue large German corporations for their impact on climate change. According to the DPA, they addressed the pre-litigation summons to Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and the oil and gas companies Wintershall.

Environmentalists want companies to change their business model and commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In their call, they demand that the carmakers stop producing vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2030. According to them, the mining concern Wintershall should stop mining fossil fuels by 2026.

According to unofficial information, DPA groups have only a few weeks left to respond to the call of environmental organizations and avert a possible lawsuit.

In a groundbreaking judgment in April, the German Constitutional Court ordered legislators to set more clearly targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions after 2030. It described the current law on climate protection as insufficient and disadvantageous for future generations. In response to the verdict in May, the German government presented a new law setting stricter targets for reducing emissions after 2030 and committing itself to achieving climate neutrality by 2045.
