Mexico City. The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), Alicia Bárcena, assured this Thursday that the authorization of the Environmental Impact Statement for the tourist and residential megaproject La Esperanza, in Cabo Pulmo, in Baja California Sur, was revoked, and confirmed the resignation from Raúl Rodríguez Quintana, his manager of the Representative Office in this entity, after endorsing this permit.
When participating in the Forum for Analysis of Sustainable Development and Climate Change Proposals, Bárcena assured that this project “was given an inappropriate authorization that it did not have (…) rather, it had a negative opinion from the Commission National Protected Natural Areas, therefore, in this case we are going to carry out a review,” Semarnat reported in a statement.
La Esperanza would cover 68.6 hectares among which the company Gre El Rincón SA de CV planned to invade 500 square meters of the coastal area of the Cabo Pulmo National Park to build a hotel, residential homes, a beach club, roads, services and a commercial area. .
On October 12, non-governmental organizations denounced that, despite the fact that the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas ruled that the project was harmful due to its possible effects on the marine habitat, Rodríguez Quintana endorsed the authorization.
Bárcena also assured that all housing and tourist developments in Cabo Pulmo are reviewed, after the Greenpeace organization reported that the Baja Bay Club project was authorized on August 22, but acknowledged that she does not know if it was approved at the municipal or state level. or federal. “We are concerned because the Cabo Pulmo national park is a priority for us,” he said.
Baja Bay Club would be developed on land that was once part of the controversial Cabo Cortés project, canceled in 2012 due to its environmental impact, with the construction of 422 villas, 275 hotel rooms, a beach club, boating infrastructure and a course golf course in an area of 600 hectares.
When addressing the “very serious environmental problems” in Mexico, the secretary said during the forum that the issue of solid waste generated in the country will be addressed, of which 90 are open-air, almost 118 thousand tons per day. He assured that they will also clean up the polluted rivers, because 70 percent are contaminated, and they will first attend to the Lerma-Santiago basin, the Tula river and the Atoyac.
He announced that this Friday he will visit the Tula refinery, in Puebla, to verify its pollutant emissions. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that she wants to reduce production from 3 million to 1.8 million barrels per day at this plant.
