(CNN) On the Spanish island of Ibiza, known worldwide as the “party island,” a local environmental group sprayed a luxury leisure boat, a Superyacht, docked with paint on Wednesday.
A video posted on social media by the environmental group Futuro Vegetal shows the two members standing in front of a superyacht holding a banner that reads, “You Consume, Everyone Suffers.” .
The members then sprayed the hull with red and black paint and said, “The top 1% of the world’s population pollutes more than the bottom 50%.” They are imposing a bleak future,” he said.
He also accused the wealthy of destroying the planet and increasing uninhabitable land in order to force their lives into luxury.
The superyacht is owned by Nancy Walton Raleigh, the daughter of the founder of US retail giant Walmart, according to multiple shipping news sites.
Futuro Vegetal said the two men were detained by the military police on the morning of the 16th and are expected to be released on the 17th.
The group also sprayed a private jet at the Ibiza airport on Saturday, shutting the airport’s runway for several hours. It is said to be the “finishing touch” to a campaign by environmental group Extinction Rebellion (XR) to ban private jets from Ibiza, calling it “jets and yachts, the party is over.”
XR has argued that the leisure activities of the wealthy are wasting precious resources. Members recently staged demonstrations to block cups at 10 golf courses across the country, blaming them for wasting water despite Spain’s record-breaking drought.
