Campania coasts and seas are increasingly threatened by environmental illegalities. In Campania in 2023 they were 3.095 the crimes ascertained by the law enforcement and from Port authorities, 3.622 administrative offencesat an average of 14.3 crimes per kilometre of coast. But the effectiveness of the repressive action is growing, as demonstrated by the number of people reported and arrested (3.341+7% compared to 2022) and that of seizures, equal to 914up 12% on 2022.
The study
This photograph was taken by the new Big Monster report 2024 That Legambiente presents on the eve of the 14th anniversary of the Pollica killing of the fisherman mayor Angelo Vassallo. Tomorrow the environmental association will be at Acciarolitogether with the Municipality of Pollica, to participate in the commemorations in memory of Vassallo, to award the Vassallo Prize to virtuous administrations this year too and to reiterate the importance of combating environmental illegality.
President Imparato
“Faced with so many crimes that affect our coasts and our seas – declares Maria Teresa Learnedregional president of Legambiente – we reiterate the need to strengthen the role and activities of all the institutions involved, from the individual Municipalities to the Regions and to the Arpa. We need to increase the demolition of illegal buildings, and not by providing new amnesties, modernize and complete the sewerage and purification system, strengthen the circular economy and provide more severe sanctions for illegal fishing“. “Once again the illegal cement cycle – adds Imparato – represents almost half of the environmental crimes in Campania due, mainly, to the myriad of building abuses that continue to scar Italy. A devastating phenomenon for the social, environmental and economic development of the entire country, and which must be addressed with a firm hand and demolitions that can no longer be postponed. Furthermore, illegal building along the coasts multiplies pollution phenomena, due to the direct discharges into the sea of illegally constructed buildings“.
