Environmental Activists Interrupt Two Matches of 1/64 Finals at Wimbledon 2023

Two matches of the 1/64 finals of Wimbledon 2023 were interrupted due to environmental activists.

On July 5, the match began on court No. 18 With Simabukuro – Grigor Dimitrov. In the middle of the meeting, two activists from the Just Stop Oil movement ran onto the court and scattered orange confetti. They carried them in boxes containing the tournament’s official jigsaw puzzles depicting Center Court. Presumably, the confetti were purchased from the tournament shop.

Two men were immediately taken off the court by the police, but the audience applauded. The duel between Dimitrov and Simabukuro ended with the score 6:1, 6:2, 6:1 in favor of the Bulgarian.

After the end of the match, the duel of the next launch began Cathy Boulter – Daria Saville. The violators returned to the court and again held an action, scattering confetti.

Just Stop Oil is an environmental activist group in the UK. Using civil resistance, vandalism and direct action, the group is seeking the British government to commit itself to suspend new licensing and production of fossil fuels.
