Environment – Berlin – Allotments rethought: forest gardens in Neukölln – Knowledge

Berlin/Kassel (dpa/bb) – The federal allotment garden law is being reinterpreted here: an allotment garden park is being created in the south of Berlin, which should clearly differ from a classic allotment garden colony. ‘A forest garden consists mainly of edible, perennial plants that partially overlap in several layers of vegetation, very similar to the structure of forests,’ explains project coordinator Jennifer Schulz from the University of Potsdam.

60 plots, a communal forest garden and one hectare of public green are planned. The handover of the area is planned for February, everyone is happy,” says Schulz. So far, the approximately three-hectare site near Buckower Damm has been used by the almost 70-hectare Britzer Garten park. Since November 2021, the Neukölln district office has had the surface prepared.

According to Schulz, arbors are only planned for 40 out of 60 plots. There are also no plans for larger open spaces, such as are known from many allotment gardens. “We don’t want monoculture lawns that are tended to with nail scissors.” The comrades-in-arms would all stand behind the ideas if they had developed them themselves. “The federal allotment garden law sets the framework, we are reinterpreting it,” says Schulz.

Two communal forest gardens are also to be created in Kassel as part of the project. The forest gardens in both cities are being funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment with around five million euros. In Berlin, the environmental administration is funding the project with 600,000 euros.
