Environment. 300 kg of waste per inhabitant per year: half is not sorted

The analysis of garbage cans says a lot about consumption and waste sorting habits. The Portes de France-Thionville agglomeration community, which has had waste management competence for five years, carried out, at the start of the year, a characterization of residual household waste in order to know precisely the composition of the so-called gray bin and of identify waste likely to be diverted to sorting and recovery channels. Illuminating.

307 kg of waste per inhabitant per year

The study focused on twelve samples spread over the entire territory of the Thionville agglomeration, all types of housing combined, and revealed that one inhabitant threw 307 kg of waste into the household garbage bin per year, nearly half of which can be recycled or recovered.

147.1 kg of poor sorting

In the 307 kg of household waste generated on average per inhabitant and per year, we find in particular 95 kg of plastic packaging, aluminum, paper, cardboard which should be in the yellow sorting bag. With the extension of the instructions, “all packaging is sorted”, reminds Émilie Tonnaire, head of the environment department at Agglo. And more than ever during the holiday season when the volume of packaging is increasing. Gift papers, toy boxes, ready-made food trays, food cartons, cans and even plastic films and Polystyrene wedges should be put in the yellow bag.

18 kg of glass, 25 kg of polluting waste and 9 kg of textiles

Glass bottles represent 18 of the 307 kg of waste produced per year and per inhabitant, despite the glass containers made available everywhere. There are also 25 kg of various and varied waste, pollutants such as batteries, batteries, paint cans, small appliances, etc., which are recovered in waste reception centers as well as 9 kg of textile, again recoverable in a dedicated container.
