ENDERNITY are a band from Madrid formed in 2019 and that have just released their first album “DISRUPTED INNOCENCE”, an album that has really pleasantly surprised me for its variety and a perfect mix between power and melody.
We have the opportunity to speak with them and get to know them a little more and we are going to take advantage of it, of course.
First of all, congratulate you on the album and thank you for attending us.
Thank you!!! the truth is that we are delighted with the good reception of the album !!
To know a little about the history of the band, I would like to know how ENDERNITY is formed, how was the process of creating the group?
[Manu] Endernity started with Isra, me and other musicians who are gone. We all came from bands that had not reached great significance but had a lot of experience. We did not want to complicate our lives, and the truth is that the first idea was to do some covers, with no other ambition than to release adrenaline in the rehearsal room and go home at ease. But quickly ideas for their own themes began to emerge. We wanted to go as far as possible now. This dissuaded the other musicians, as they could not deliver the level of demand and commitment required for a band that goes all out. In my case, I made contacts and thus began the collaboration with Edu Brenes (Jorge Salán’s drums, Skunk DF… collaborator with Sherpa de Barón Rojo and many others). Edu began to collaborate with me in the composition, focusing on the percussion and also on the arrangements of the songs. And in fact Edu recorded the drums on the disc; although later he took on the role of our manager and artistic production. When we found out, we had such an interesting project in hand that it attracted other musicians such as Rodri Arias (guitarist for Skunk DF, Nadye, Lülu, The Bon Scott Revival show… and more… even rapper Sharif). Rodri recorded the album with us and now it is “strained to the core.” Eric started later and comes from a multitude of bands and various tributes (Noel Soto, Western Pacific, Don Skull, etc). Eric is also completely “endernizado” and very excited about this project.
On the album, you can see a great variety of music, always within metal but using different registers, what are your influences?
[Manu] Well, most of us were already listening to metal in the late 80s. We are very old !!! In particular I, who am the oldest… I take Isra one week old. And as you can imagine my influences are the Big 4 (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax)… and also Iron Maiden and many others. I also love Alter Bridge, Avanged… and many virtuoso guitarists like Satriani, Vai… Andy Timmons and many more.
[Isra] I subscribe to what Manu said … and in my case also … Lifetime Spanish rock and metal.
[Eric] Pantera, Slip Knot, No FX, Megadeth, Limp Biscuit, Rage against… un largo etc.
[Rodri] Extreme, Opeth, etc
How was the composition process for “DISRUPTED INNOCENCE”?
[Manu] Well, we have put all the care in it. Our goal was to offer our own sound. We have escaped being the typical cliché group that is a copy of others. And we wanted each song to offer something different… a kind of journey. First we work on the musical aspect, reviewing the structure of the songs as many times as necessary so that each song is round… then we work on the theme of the songs.
Regarding the theme, we wanted to tell stories … put ourselves in the shoes of real or fictional characters. We do not want to give our opinion, much less go into issues of religion or politics.
Did you ever consider singing the songs in Spanish? Or were you clear from the beginning that you would do it in English?
[Isra] Yes, singing in English was the goal from the beginning. Besides, Manu is very bad at singing in Spanish … haha … it sounds like a foreigner who sings in Spanish. But the reason is that we all like the sound more.
You have recorded at THE METAL FACTORY studios and the truth is that the sound shows that you have worked it out, at least it seems to me, how has your recording experience been? Are you happy with the result?
[Manu] Honestly, it was an unbeatable experience. Although it was just the week in which the state of alarm was going to be declared in March 2020. And in fact, it was declared the day we were recording the bass and the instrumental part was finished. That caused the recording of the voices to be interrupted until months later. Would it have something to do with the fact that the album is called disrupted innocence?…. haha… pure irony.
The producer was Pablo Rouss and he was honestly very demanding and brought out the best in everyone. With my voice in particular, it took me out of my comfort zone at all times… it made me change the focus of some parts. A good example is the clean sung parts.
It was a unique experience and we loved the dedication and flexibility we had at all times.
In this difficult time that we are all going through, how do you organize yourself? Can you rehearse? How does this whole situation affect you at the group level?
[Rodri] It is quite a curious situation that we are living yes. We are doing a lot of individual work at home and then as soon as we have a little option to get together, we do it. The band’s agenda is altered and guided by Covid … like everyone else’s. But the biggest problem is found in direct closing. Everything else can be organized … but the concerts depend directly on the situation.
It is obvious that you will be wanting to present your album live, although we already know how the matter is … do you have something prepared? Have you considered doing it via the internet, in case you cannot do it with your audience?
[Eric] Rodri already commented a bit before… we are ready to jump on stage at any moment. It is even possible that in a month or two we will play in Madrid… but we are focused on seeing when to close the tour dates. Perhaps towards June it will be the most optimistic. We are going to do a study session that will be recorded … and we will assess some streaming. But all this is in the air. We will inform in our networks.
Does it seem that rock and metal are losing weight among the youngest, who are taking on other musical styles, the old concert halls are closing, everything is getting a bit complicated, but still bands are coming out with rock as their flag, ¿ How do you see it? How do you see the state of heavy music in general and Madrid in particular?
[Manu] You’re right… it is especially seen in younger people. The most terrible thing is that the taste for good music is being lost … and I don’t want to refer to other genres that are heard now, but they have nothing to do with Metal or other genres that do offer a lot of quality; Unfortunately. But I want to be self-critical … I see a lot of segmentation among Metal people … sometimes we are not very open with new bands, styles, etc. I even see haters … who do little or no favors for this music. We should be more united and support… support so that Metal is where it deserves. Still … we have a lot of hope and from Endernity we are going to do our bit to offer quality and try to reach the youngest.
Well, for our part nothing more, it has been a pleasure, I just wish you good luck and we hope to see you very soon on stage, if you want to send a greeting to our readers, thank you very much for your time and a big hug.
[Manu] If you leave us… before saying goodbye we want to tell you about a very important and emotional collaboration. We have started a collaboration with the Spanish Parkinson’s Federation (FEP) in relation to the theme “I dream that I can fly”. This song is about reduced mobility and it is a very special song for me because it is dedicated to my mother with advanced Parkinson’s. FEP and we are going to work together to make this disease much more visible. Endernity is donating all proceeds from this song to FEP. We will announce more on social networks, etc.
And now yes … let us thank you for the interview !! A hug!!!
