The last village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence before the Alpes-Maritimes and located one hour from Nice, the village of Entrevaux developed around a rocky spur dominated by the Vauban citadel.

Already holder of the “village and city of character” label, the city recently joined the association of most beautiful villages in France.

A city with a rich military past

Nestled in the mountains and crossed by the Var, Entrevaux is recognizable from afar thanks to its citadel perched on the heights. Built by Vauban in the 17th century, it is a symbol of the long military history from the city.

In 1536, Charles V sent 50,000 men to invade Provence. Entrevaux was taken in August but, barely a month later, the town liberated itself, with the help of a barbier local. While he was shaving the Spanish governor, he decided to slit his throat, which kicked off the general revolt.

After the victory, the Dauphin, then the King, declared Entrevaux “royal city” and will exempt it from “sizes, loans, services and duties”.

Below the citadel is the village. The small streets, mostly pedestrian, seem to come from medieval times. Most actually date from 18th century.

Among the buildings to see, we can cite the old Entrevaux cathedral, now a parish church. Directly integrated into the city walls, it has been classified monument in 1996.
