Entrepreneurs who have run into problems due to the corona crisis will still receive an extra three months from paying taxes. State Secretary Vijlbrief of Finance will therefore still follow a ruling from the House of Representatives, he said tonight. The postponement initially expired on July 1, but has now been extended to October 1.
The extra postponement was a widely supported wish of the House of Representatives, which adopted a motion about this from the VVD at the beginning of this month. But the cabinet rejected the motion. Minister Hoekstra said at the time that he thought it was “really sensible” if companies would meet their tax obligations again as of 1 July.
The government’s argument was that the economy is now back on track to ensure that most entrepreneurs earn enough to pay their taxes, such as VAT and payroll tax. But according to the House, this is far from the case for all entrepreneurs, and they can now run into money problems.
Respite
The cabinet appears to be sensitive to that argument and will therefore carry out the motion. This gives the entrepreneurs another three months of grace.
About a quarter of a million entrepreneurs have taken advantage of the option to apply for tax deferral since March last year. As a result, the tax authorities still have billions in tax debt outstanding. Those debts must be repaid from October next year. Companies have five years to do this.
