Tesla fans love their electric cars. However, a young entrepreneur from the USA did not warm to his Tesla and sold it after only five weeks. On YouTube he explains what bothers him so much about the Tesla Model Y.

“When you spend $ 77,000 on a vehicle, you expect a certain degree of perfection and functionality that an everyday car should bring with it,” Hayden begins his rant on his YouTube channel of the same name. He bought his brand new Model Y in the performance version just five weeks ago and now wants to get rid of it quickly.

More on the subject: Strong criticism of Tesla: “I returned my Model Y”

Hayden claims that he researched the electric SUV thoroughly before buying it: “Yet not a single YouTube video or article has ever mentioned these three things. […] If I had known that and had thought about it properly during the test drive, I would not have bought the vehicle. “

The blogger has covered a total of 6,400 kilometers in his Stromer and even stayed in it four times.

These are the three things that bothers him most about Model Y:

1. The headrest cannot be adjusted. “The angle is just weird,” says Hayden, who is struggling with back problems. “You could adjust that in any normal car. Only in Model Y you can’t change the headrest, ”he complains. His suggestion: an adjustable headrest should be offered as a special feature that can be added to the Tesla configurator for a fee before buying the car.

2. Charging: If you want to cover longer and unknown distances with your electric car, it is worth planning breaks in charge in advance. Model Y has this function and automatically searches for the cheapest stops and loading times. “I can personally confirm that the charging pauses are longer […]“, Says the YouTuber.

According to him, this is mainly due to two things. First, the actual range differs greatly from the range estimated by the manufacturer. Hayden taps his battery level, which shows a range of the equivalent of 360 kilometers. In reality, that’s only 160 kilometers. The second reason is the actual range. Even if you don’t exceed the speed limit, drive with speed control and have not activated any additional features, the vehicle quickly loses range.

As with gasoline or diesel engines, the driving style has a major influence on the consumption and thus the range of electric cars. Do you like to drive in a sporty manner, so often give full power and only brake at the last moment, but with full power? That costs range, because a lot of power costs a lot of electricity. In addition, when the brakes are applied hard, the electric car cannot convert the braking force back into electricity by braking the motor. That too costs range.

3. The electricity costs. Electricity is too expensive for Tesla driver Haydn. Compared to gasoline, you save only ten percent on a supercharger, but you have to drive to the next charging station for half an hour. “It’s just a waste of time,” he says.

Charging at home is not an option for him because it takes too long. Why he doesn’t just charge his e-car overnight is not clear from the video. A lot of money can be saved in the process. Household electricity costs around 13 euro cents in the USA, a little less than half that of German electricity. A Model Y can be fully charged for less than ten euros. At around 60 cents per liter, petrol is also much cheaper in the USA than in Germany.

Despite their higher purchase price, electric cars are often cheaper than combustion cars. However, this is not due to the lower consumption alone. A comprehensive comparison of electric cars and combustion engines shows that if you include all the costs for maintenance, wearing parts, taxes, subsidies and insurance, electric cars are already often doing better than combustion engines as soon as a certain minimum mileage is exceeded.

The mostly lower running costs for electric cars then outweigh the higher purchase price and lead to a positive balance for electric cars over the years. The EFAHRER.com cost calculator gives you a quick overview of the costs incurred. In addition to acquisition costs, running costs are also included and compared with combustion engines.

Young entrepreneur Hayden still thinks that a Tesla just doesn’t suit him: “I would give the vehicle a positive rating overall if I only had one car and used it accordingly,” says Hayden. But this is not the case. The YouTuber has a lot of cars and wanted to use Model Y for a very specific purpose. “I bought it specifically for road trips and that was a big mistake. I wanted to spend the night in the car and travel around … ”.

Tesla-Mom“Tiffani Van Ee made exactly that a reality and traveled across the USA with her little daughter in a Tesla Model S for 68 days. EFAHRER.com wrote down her electric road trip.
